Vision of a Volunteer – Vincent

September 10, 2015

Volunteering with AADP greatly benefits patients in need of a match. In turn, working with patients touches the lives of volunteers. To highlight this, we are starting a series of volunteer stories, Vision of A Volunteer, where our hardworking helpers have a chance to share how volunteering with AADP has impacted them.

I first heard of AADP through Janet Liang.  She was an activist, a teacher, and someone who was incredibly close to me.  Her persistence and tenacious effort to find bone marrow matches–not just for herself–but for other leukemia patients were one of the many reasons as to why she inspired me to pursue a passion in health-care. After she passed away to leukemia in 2012, I wanted to honor her and continue her legacy in some way–channeling her voracity to help others.  So in 2013, I joined AADP as their photographer/videographer intern in hopes of utilizing my visual narrative skills in finding donor matches for people within the AAPI community.  One of the many reasons why I enjoy being part of AADP team is the opportunity to participate with many patient stories and be able to convert their stories into narratives that have the potential to create changes.  As someone who is pursuing a career in nursing, I have found that storytelling and nursing goes hand in hand.  Storytelling allows an organic relationship to develop between patients and care-taker.  It creates trust, empathy, and a transformative quality that can not only enrich the patient’s life, but the listener’s as well.  These are the positive elements I’ve experienced working with AADP.
